As early as the 1970s, the OECD and the WHO postulated that a different type of training institution was needed for modern learning and more effective action in the health sector. They propagated “Health Universities”, in which all disciplines on health-related issues are united under one roof. It was postulated that it was not enough to continue training in parallel silos. What was needed was an integrating vision with interprofessional teaching and learning arrangements, “which transcends their individual missions”. They also focused on prevention and health promotion. In 2012, the German Science Council propagated this concept in its recommendations on higher education qualifications for the health system as a “health campus” for implementation in Germany.
